Javier Benedí Benito (Zaragoza 1957- Palma 2002) developed a brilliant career as a researcher in the interface between the most academic aspects of molecular biology and their applications to a wide spectrum of sectors. Through the example of his research, teaching and training of young scientists and his interaction with colleagues in different research fields, Benedí Benito helped promote a particular sensitivity towards science’s role in society. This study, conceived as tribute to Benedí Benito, delves into this line of thought to offer a contemporary, plural view of the social role of science in the Balearic Islands.
